What Casio is
Plain language, nothing assumed. A reader who knows nothing about watches should finish this and understand why this company matters.
A workshop, a cigarette ring, and a calculator
Casio's own history begins with a person rather than a company. Tadao Kashio, whom Casio calls "one of the founders" (plural, because there were four brothers), was born in 1917.[Casio] In 1946 he set up his own business, Kashio Seisakujo, in Mitaka, Tokyo.[Casio] Casio describes it as "a small subcontractor factory that made microscope parts and gears."[Casio]
The product that paid for what came next was not a timepiece and not a calculator. It was the yubiwa pipe: a finger ring that let a cigarette be smoked down to the nub, invented in a Japan where commodities were scarce.[Casio] It became a hit.[Casio]
What the brothers built with the proceeds was the 14-A, which Casio's own timeline calls "the world's first compact all-electric calculator."[Casio] Read the qualifiers: compact and all-electric. Room-filling relay computers already existed; the 14-A did four-function arithmetic to fourteen digits using 341 relays[Casio] and was small enough to sit on a desk.[Casio] Casio Computer Co., Ltd. was established in June 1957, in the same breath as the contract that would sell the machine.[Casio] Casio's corporate profile gives the date precisely: 1 June 1957.[Casio]
Two dates, two different things
1946 is a one-man subcontract workshop called Kashio Seisakujo.[Casio] 1957 is the incorporation of Casio Computer Co., Ltd.[Casio] They are eleven years and one company apart, and this page keeps them apart. Casio's own corporate profile lists only the 1957 date, under the label "Established".[Casio]
How a calculator company ended up making watches
Casio did not set out to be a watchmaker. By its own account it entered timepieces from a position of strength in calculators, seeing the same electronics it already understood.[Casio] The result, in November 1974, was the Casiotron: "the first watch released by Casio."[Casio]
Casio makes a "world's first" claim for it, and the claim is carefully scoped. The timeline calls the Casiotron "the world's first electronic watch equipped with an automatic calendar."[Casio] The narrative on the same page scopes it slightly differently, as "the world's first watch calendar that automatically adjusted for longer and shorter months."[Casio] Neither claim covers leap years. Casio says so itself: a fully automatic calendar that handled 29 February came after.[Casio]
The G-SHOCK, and the goal it did not meet
In April 1983 Casio released the DW-5000C, the first G-SHOCK.[Casio] Before it, in Casio's words, "watches were sensitive instruments that required careful handling."[Casio]
It was developed against a target Casio calls the Triple 10: "the goal of achieving three key standards: 10-bar water resistance, shock resistance capable of withstanding a 10-meter drop, and a 10-year battery life."[Casio] The word goal is Casio's own, and the reason this Codex takes the trouble to say so is that Casio then documents, on the same page, what the watch actually shipped with: 20-bar water resistance, shock resistance meeting the ISO and JIS standards for a free fall from one metre, and a battery life of seven years.[Casio] Two of the three tens were not reached. A company publishing that about its own most famous product is unusual enough that this Codex records it in Legacy as well.
Two things worth knowing before you go looking
Casio is not mainly a watch company by product range, but it is by revenue. Its own profile lists its major products as "Timepieces, Calculators, Electronic Dictionaries, Label Printers, Electronic Musical Instruments, Others."[Casio] Yet the Timepieces segment was 67.0% of group sales in the year to March 2026 (see the published figures).
And the names on the dials are Casio's own. G-SHOCK, BABY-G, OCEANUS, PRO TREK, EDIFICE and SHEEN are brands of Casio Computer Co., Ltd., not companies it acquired, which is the opposite of the pattern at several other groups this Codex covers.
How to read the brand
Structure, the brand line-up, where the watches are made, and the technologies. For a buyer, a student, a collector starting out, or a retailer's new hire.
Who actually owns what
Casio's corporate structure is simpler than most groups in this Codex: CASIO COMPUTER CO., LTD.[Casio] is itself the listed company that makes and sells the watches, with no separate watch-operating subsidiary carrying the brand. Its head office is at 6-2, Hon-machi 1-chome, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 151-8543.[Casio] Paid-in capital is 48,592 million yen as at 31 March 2026.[Casio] It is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange[Casio] under securities code 6952[Casio], and one of its own news releases carries the market segment in its header: "Stock code: 6952 (TSE Prime)".[Casio]
The listing is older than the G-SHOCK: Casio stock was listed on the second section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in September 1970.[Casio]
The brands, as Casio itself lists them
Casio's own business page prints its watch brands in this order:
| Brand | What Casio says about it here |
|---|---|
| G-SHOCK | Casio describes the shock-resistant line as having "won an unparalleled position in the global market"[Casio] |
| BABY-G | Listed on the same row; no separate description is quoted here |
| OCEANUS | Listed on the same row; carries its own Multiband 6 technology page[Casio] |
| PRO TREK | Listed on the same row |
| EDIFICE | Listed on the same row |
| SHEEN | Listed on the same row |
| CASIO WATCH | Casio presents these models as "highly regarded for being affordable while offering high quality"[Casio] |
Casio's own statement of what the timepiece business is for: it "has always sought to provide timepieces that accurately measure time every second of every day".[Casio]
The collections, as G-SHOCK's own product pages list them
The table above answers which brands Casio owns. It does not answer the next question a buyer actually asks: which line, within G-SHOCK, is this watch from? Casio's own G-SHOCK site divides the brand into named collections, each with its own dedicated page. MR-G sits at the top: Casio's own heading calls it "the flagship G-SHOCK line"[Casio], built, the page says, with "a proud spirit of commitment to maintaining a creative, original style" through "crafting traditions with deep roots in Japan."[Casio] MT-G is positioned just below it: "Unique metal-incorporated craftsmanship, sophisticated technologies, and legendary G-SHOCK toughness are hallmarks of the MT-G collection of luxury watches."[Casio] G-STEEL is the entry point to G-SHOCK's metal watches, described on its own page as "Analog, digital, and analog-digital men's stainless-steel watches crafted G-SHOCK tough."[Casio]
MASTER OF G is organised differently from the three above: it is a family of task-specific sub-lines rather than one finish or material. Casio's own page frames it as "critical information for outdoor adventuring, mountaineering, backpacking, and military or police purposes," covering land, sea and air[Casio], and names five sub-lines beneath it: Rangeman, Mudmaster, Mudman, Frogman and Gravitymaster.[Casio] Frogman carries the certification claim discussed next (see Certification).
A fifth line, FULL METAL, could not be read from its own dedicated collection page this session: two attempts to fetch it were refused by this Codex's own fetch tool rather than by Casio (see the note in gaps). The characterisation here instead comes from Casio America's own press release for the GMW‑BZ5000, the line's newest model: an "all-new GMWBZ5000 Collection, ushering in a new era of full-metal toughness," built from "intricately shaped, interlocking metal components secured by front screws for a bold, industrial appearance unlike any previous G-SHOCK."[Casio] This is a press release about one model generation, not the dedicated collection page's own summary of the whole line, and this page keeps that distinction rather than presenting the two as equivalent.
This is the G-SHOCK level only. Whether BABY-G, OCEANUS, PRO TREK, EDIFICE or SHEEN carry their own named sub-collections was not checked this session; G-SHOCK was chosen because it is the line that makes Casio a watch company by revenue.
Certification: ISO 6425 for one line, nothing for timekeeping
No Casio page checked for this dossier carries a COSC, METAS or other third-party chronometer-accuracy certification. The closest Casio comes to a numbered standard for the original G-SHOCK is the ISO and JIS references already quoted in the Triple 10, precisely, which describe a shock-resistance test method the 1983 watch was built to meet, not a certificate issued by an outside body.
One current line does invoke a numbered diving standard directly. Announcing the MRG-BF1000R, the first MR-G built in Frogman form, a Casio Europe press release states: "The tough diving watches of the FROGMAN series are certified as per ISO 6425, water-resistant up to 200 m."[Casio] Read this claim for what it is and no more: it is Casio's own conformance statement about the Frogman series as a class, made in a March 2023 press release, not a per-reference certificate from an outside testing laboratory located on a current product page, and no such laboratory certificate was found for any Casio-branded watch this session.
Where a Casio watch is actually made
Casio publishes more about this than most brands in this Codex. Its own quality page states: "The Premium Production Line at Yamagata Casio produces high-end watches."[Casio] Yamagata Casio Co., Ltd.[Casio] is in Higashine, Yamagata prefecture[Casio]; Casio Timepiece (Dongguan) Co., Ltd.[Casio] is in Dongguan, China.[Casio]
But the group's own centre of gravity is elsewhere: "Casio carries out the majority of its production outside Japan at Casio plants and manufacturing subcontractors (electronic manufacturing services)."[Casio] Its annual securities report names five principal producing companies for the Timepieces segment: Yamagata Casio, Casio Computer (Hong Kong), Casio Electronics (Shenzhen), Casio Electronics (Shaoguan) and Casio (Thailand).[Casio]
What a G-SHOCK costs, from Casio's own releases
Casio's live e-commerce product pages render their prices by client-side script, which this session's fetch tool could not capture as static text; repeated attempts on several casio.com product URLs returned no price field at all. The two figures below instead come from Casio's own press releases, which state a price in plain, static text.
| Reference | Line | Price as stated | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| GMWBZ5000 series (D-1, BD-1, GD-9) | Full Metal (see Collections) | $660–$720 across the series[Casio] | Casio America, Inc., 10 December 2025 |
| MRG-BF1000R-1ADR | MR-G Frogman (see Certification) | €5,000 MSRP[Casio] | Casio Europe, 15 March 2023 |
No single price band is stated here, for two reasons kept separate on purpose. First, a $660–$720 US launch price and a €5,000 European launch price are in different currencies from different regional entities; converting either into the other would make the figure this Codex's arithmetic, not Casio's. Second, the MRG-BF1000R price is a March 2023 launch price, over three years old at the time of writing, and this page does not represent it as a current figure. A third, lower-priced example — the kind that would anchor the budget end of G-SHOCK's range — was sought from Casio's press releases and regional sites this session and not found in static, dated, sourceable form; see gaps.
The technologies, as Casio defines them
Tough Solar. Casio's own definition describes a solar-charging system whose panels "convert light even from fluorescent lamps into power".[Casio]
Multiband 6. A miniature antenna receives standard-time radio waves carrying atomic-clock time.[Casio] Here two of Casio's own pages describe the same feature differently, and this Codex publishes both rather than choosing: the G-SHOCK technology page itemises the transmitters as "Japan (2 stations), North America, the UK, Germany and China"[Casio], while the OCEANUS page describes reception "from 6 stations around the world" and names Europe rather than the individual countries.[Casio] Six transmitters, five territories, two ways of saying it. The G-SHOCK page also states the watch keeps time "at night with automatic reception (up to 6 times)".[Casio]
Casio's G-SHOCK technology index lists thirteen technologies by name (including "200m Water Resistance", "Triple G Resist", "Solar-powered (Tough Solar)" and "TOUGH MVT."[Casio]), but gives no definition for any of them on that page, so the definitions above are quoted from the individual technology pages instead.
What this page does not yet tell you
Honesty about gaps is a rule here, not a courtesy. These things are absent because they have not been verified yet:
- A full price band. Prices now carries two official launch prices in two currencies, but no budget-tier example in static, sourceable text: this session's fetch tool could not read a price off Casio's own live product pages, which render price client-side.
- A dedicated FULL METAL collection-page source. Collections describes this line from a model-specific press release rather than its own collection page: two attempts to fetch
gshock.casio.com/us/products/full-metal/this session were refused by this Codex's own fetch tool before reaching Casio. - A per-reference ISO 6425 certificate. Certification records Casio's own press-release claim for the Frogman series as a class; no outside testing-laboratory certificate naming a specific reference was found.
- Whether other Casio brands have named sub-collections. Collections covers G-SHOCK only; BABY-G, OCEANUS, PRO TREK, EDIFICE and SHEEN were not checked for their own collection structures.
- Definitions for nine of the thirteen listed technologies. The index names them; the individual pages were not all read.[Casio]
- An advertising figure. Casio names advertising as a principal operating expense but attaches no amount to it in the documents read: see the published figures.

A claim this Codex withheld, and can now publish
An earlier session recorded, in Legacy, that Kikuo Ibe's role in the G-SHOCK could not be published because he was not named on the Casio pages then checked. He still is not: he appears on neither the corporate-history chapter that records the DW-5000C nor the Triple 10 page.[Casio]
But he is named on a third Casio page. Of the proposal for a watch that would not break, Casio writes: "The author of these words was Kikuo Ibe, who was in charge of watch exterior design at the time."[Casio] The same page adds that "Ibe's vision defied all conventional wisdom, so the work for bringing it to fruition had to start from square one"[Casio], and that he "was able to solve the size issue by devising a five-stage shock-absorbing structure designed to protect the core components of the watch with five cushioning materials."[Casio]
Note what Casio does not say. On that page it describes Ibe by his job at the time (watch exterior design) and credits him with the proposal, the vision and the shock-absorbing structure. It does not call him the inventor of the G-SHOCK, and neither does this page.
The Triple 10, precisely
The goal and the outcome come from the same Casio page and should always be quoted together. The goal: "10-bar water resistance, shock resistance capable of withstanding a 10-meter drop, and a 10-year battery life."[Casio] The outcome: the DW-5000C "featured 20-bar water resistance", shock resistance to the ISO and JIS standards for "a free fall from 1 meter", and a seven-year battery.[Casio]
One unit difference worth knowing. Casio's corporate-history page states the same watch's water resistance in metres: "The DW-5000C was water resistant to 200 meters."[Casio] The Triple 10 page states it in bar. 200 metres and 20 bar are the same nominal rating expressed two ways; this page keeps each figure with the page it came from rather than silently merging them.
Casio's own framing of why this mattered: at the time, it writes, "diver's watches were still regarded as professional" equipment, and the G-SHOCK overturned a common perception of what a wristwatch had to be.[Casio] The watch itself was built with "five protective layers" and a hollow structure "minimizing impact transmission".[Casio]
Commonly confused
| Common claim | What the primary source says |
|---|---|
| The first G-SHOCK achieved the "Triple 10" | Casio states the Triple 10 as a goal and documents the DW-5000C's actual 20-bar / 1-metre / 7-year specification itself |
| Casio was founded in 1946 | 1946 is the Kashio Seisakujo workshop; Casio Computer Co., Ltd. was established in June 1957 |
| The Casiotron was the world's first digital watch | Casio's claim is scoped to the automatic calendar ("the world's first electronic watch equipped with an automatic calendar"), and Casio says the leap-year-capable calendar came later |
| Kikuo Ibe is Casio's "inventor of the G-SHOCK" | The Casio page that names him describes him as having been "in charge of watch exterior design at the time" and credits him with the proposal and the shock-absorbing structure; it uses no inventor title |
| Casio's watch revenue is G-SHOCK revenue | The lowest level at which Casio publishes watch revenue is the Timepieces segment, whose stated scope is watches, clocks and others |
Does Casio make for other brands?
Make your own covers movement supply and private label generally; this is only what Casio's own documents say.
Casio states no position, and the silence was checked rather than assumed. Across eighteen of Casio's own pages (the corporate site, the business, group, profile and procurement pages, quality and supply-chain pages, investor relations and risk, the global and India consumer sites), Casio nowhere states that it designs, develops or produces watches or movements for another company's brand, and the words OEM, ODM and contract manufacturing never appear describing anything Casio supplies outward.[Casio]
Where contract manufacturing does appear, Casio is the buyer. Its own risk disclosure states: "The Casio Group outsources a substantial portion of its manufacturing and assembly processes to outside suppliers in order to improve production efficiency and operating margins, which could result in production risks including delivery delays and difficulties providing reliable quality control."[Casio] Its supply-chain page says the same thing from the other side: the majority of production happens outside Japan, at Casio plants and at manufacturing subcontractors.[Casio] The procurement pages are addressed entirely to suppliers selling to Casio.[Casio]
No commercial terms are published either. On the pages checked, Casio publishes no minimum order quantity, no price list and no eligibility criteria for a business customer, and no B2B or OEM enquiry page was found; two plausible business URLs were tried and both return 404.[Casio]
Why this is worth recording rather than skipping
This is the second position this Codex has recorded on the question and they are different. One Japanese group's movement arm states openly that it supplies brands worldwide and publishes a minimum order on one calibre's page. Casio says nothing at all. Neither silence nor disclosure is treated here as better: the record is simply what each company publishes, and an absence that was checked is worth more than an absence that was assumed.
The published figures
What Casio reports, in its own words, and what it does not break out. If the words below are unfamiliar, the money page explains them from the beginning.
Casio's financial year ends on 31 March, and its most recent full year is the one ended 31 March 2026, reported under Japanese GAAP.[Casio] Casio also publishes an English version of the same document[Casio], which carries its own notice that the Japanese original prevails in any discrepancy, so where a figure matters below, it is taken from the Japanese.
All figures in this section are in millions of yen, as the document's own unit row states.[Casio] For the year ended 31 March 2026: net sales 276,267 (+5.5%), operating profit 23,071 (+62.1%), ordinary profit 25,684 (+81.8%), and profit attributable to owners of the parent 18,227 (+126.0%).[Casio] The prior year, ended 31 March 2025, was 261,757 (−2.6%), 14,236 (+0.2%), 14,131 (−21.1%) and 8,064 (−32.3%).[Casio] Casio's corporate profile states the same net-sales figure in the Japanese 億/万 style (2,762億6,700万円), which converts to 276,267 million yen exactly.[Casio]
Read the segment table carefully, and note it changed this year
Casio reorganised its reporting this year: "The company previously divided segment information into four reportable segments" and, from this fiscal year, "included System Equipment within Others and changed to three reportable segments: Timepieces, Consumer, and Others."[Casio] The Japanese original explains the reason: the transfer of the HR and SMB businesses to Casio Human Systems and the subsequent sale of that company's shares.[Casio] Anything written from memory of the old four-segment structure is now wrong.
External sales by segment: Timepieces 184,966, Consumer 82,057, Others 9,244, totalling the consolidated 276,267.[Casio] Segment profit: Timepieces 27,125, Consumer 3,415, Others a loss of 1,261, totalling 29,279, from which a 6,208 adjustment gives the consolidated operating profit of 23,071.[Casio] That adjustment is entirely unallocated corporate cost: mainly head-office administration and basic research.[Casio] Note the table's own structure: the "total" column is the pre-adjustment segment total, and a separate column headed "amount recorded in the consolidated financial statements" is the consolidated figure.[Casio]
The Timepieces segment is not a wristwatch figure. Its stated scope in the Japanese original is ウオッチ、クロック等: watches, clocks, and others[Casio], and Casio's English version renders it "Timepieces············Watches, Clocks, etc."[Casio] So 184,966 million yen covers clocks as well as watches, and covers every Casio watch brand together.
How big the watch business is inside the group. Casio's supplementary data gives the Timepieces segment quarter by quarter, and its own constituent-ratio row puts the segment at 67.0% of group sales for the year.[Casio] That same table carries a forecast column for the year ending March 2027 immediately beside the actuals; this Codex publishes the actuals and not the forecast, because a forecast is not a result.
There is no G-SHOCK revenue figure, and the temptation to make one is the trap
Casio publishes no yen sales figure for G-SHOCK, or for any individual watch brand, in its results summary, its supplementary data or its results briefing; the lowest level at which watch revenue is published is the Timepieces segment.[Casio] What Casio does publish, on a fourth-quarter product slide, is a proportion: "G-SHOCK比率(BABY-G含) 約42%", approximately 42% including BABY-G[Casio], and a unit count: approximately 1.5 million pieces in that quarter, of which about 150,000 were BABY-G, against about 1.6 million in the prior year's fourth quarter.[Casio]
Both are approximate, both are one quarter, and one is units rather than money. Multiplying the 42% by the annual segment total would produce a number Casio has never published, for a period it does not describe. This Codex does not publish estimates, so no such figure appears here.
People. 8,259 employees on a consolidated basis as at 31 March 2026, plus 947 average temporary employees, down from 10,152 five years earlier.[Casio] Casio's Japanese corporate profile gives the same consolidated figure alongside a parent-company figure of 2,053[Casio], dated to the same day[Casio], and the English profile gives the consolidated 8,259 only.[Casio] All three documents agree, which is worth saying, because that is not always the case: the Citizen dossier had to publish two different employee counts from two of that company's own documents.
Advertising. No amount is published in the documents read. Casio's annual securities report names it only in passing, as one of three principal operating expenses alongside personnel and research costs.[Casio] A search of the results summary, the results briefing and the retrieved pages of the securities report found no figure[Casio], with the honest limitation that the securities-report retrieval did not cover the whole filing, so this is a statement about what was read, not about what exists.
These figures are reported here as Casio Computer Co., Ltd. published them. This Codex does not interpret them, does not say whether they are good or bad, does not compare them with another company's, and publishes no valuation of Casio or of any watch. Currency, unit and period are stated because all three change the meaning of a number.

What is a locator here, and what is not
Casio publishes an interactive store locator for India[Casio], which is linked above. It does not, on the pages checked for this page, publish a searchable service-centre locator: the warranty page offers downloadable per-line PDFs and the support page a static region menu instead.[Casio] That is a statement about the pages read, not about Casio's whole estate.
As everywhere in this Codex, no dealer list is compiled here. The brand's own locator is the authoritative answer to "where can I buy this", so that is what gets linked.
