What Titan is

Plain language, nothing assumed. A reader who knows nothing about watches should finish this and understand why this company matters.

A watch company that a State government helped start

Every other brand in this Codex so far began as a workshop, a shop or a distributor. Titan began as a joint venture with a State government. Its own annual report puts it in one sentence: Titan's story began in 1984, when the Tata Group and TIDCO came together with a vision to create something truly distinctive.[Titan: annual report]

TIDCO is the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, and Titan's own page about it gives its character in one sentence, quoted here whole because the end of it matters as much as the beginning: TIDCO, a Government of Tamil Nadu Enterprise, was incorporated as a Limited Company in the year 1965, in order to identify and promote the establishment of large and medium scale industries within the State of Tamil Nadu in association with the private sector.[Titan] In association with the private sector is the model Titan was built on. The same page describes TIDCO's normal scale of participation: Equity participation by TIDCO in the Joint Sector projects ranges from 11 to 26 % and in the associate Sector ranges 2 to 11% equity.[Titan] Titan is well outside that range, at 27.88%. See who actually owns what.

Its registered office is still in the industrial town where its factory sits, not in the city where its head office is: 3, SIPCOT Industrial Complex, Hosur 635 126 TN India, as printed on its own annual report.[Titan: annual report]

The company's original name, and a citation this page will not pretend is stronger than it is

A Titan-operated OEM site states that Titan Company Limited opened its doors on 26th July, 1984 under the name Titan Watches Limited in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.[Titan] That is the only source found for the exact day and for the original name, and it is the weakest-provenance source on this page: its copy is written in Titan's own first person and its content is a Titan brand timeline, but no copyright line, registered-office line or company number could be read on it, so its being Titan's own is an inference from the text rather than a statement the page makes. A second reader was asked specifically to look for an ownership statement and found none.

What is independently structural: the company's own registry number, L74999TZ1984PLC001456, carries TZ for Tamil Nadu and 1984 as the year of registration, which agrees with the year and the State but says nothing about the day or the former name. So 1984 and Tamil Nadu are solid; "26 July" and "Titan Watches Limited" rest on that one page and are published as such.

The shareholding is the other way round from what most people assume

Titan is universally described as a Tata company, and it is one. But in its own shareholding filing as at 30 June 2025, the single largest holder in the promoter group is TIDCO at 27.88%, ahead of Tata Sons Private Limited at 20.84%.[Titan: shareholding filing] The Tata side is larger than Tata Sons alone, because four further Tata-group entities also hold shares. But no single Tata entity holds as much as the State government's corporation does. The full table is in who actually owns what. This Codex draws no conclusion from the arrangement; it simply records what the filing says, because the common shorthand omits it.

Two things worth knowing before you go looking

Titan is a watch brand that earns most of its money from jewellery. Its reportable segments are Watches, Jewellery, Eyecare and Others[Titan: own report], and for the year ended 31 March 2026 the Watches segment reported revenue of ₹5,267 crore while Jewellery reported ₹79,660 crore.[Titan: own report] That is not a judgement about Titan; it is what its own segment table says. The figures and their cautions are in the published figures, and the money page explains the words from the beginning.

And Titan publishes a price, which no other brand in this Codex does. On its own site, each watch carries an MRP in rupees, marked Inclusive of all taxes*.[Titan: own site] Rolex publishes no price at all; Seiko, Citizen, Casio and Omega publish some prices in some markets but none is recorded in this Codex yet. Titan's are recorded in what a Titan watch costs, with the reason it publishes them stated plainly there.

Exploring

How to read the brand

Ownership, the brand line-up, the licensed names, where the watches are made, and what a watch actually costs. For a buyer, a student, a collector starting out, or a retailer's new hire.

Who actually owns what

The legal entity is Titan Company Limited, carrying the Corporate Identity Number L74999TZ1984PLC001456 on its own statutory filings[Titan: annual report][Titan: own report], with its registered office at 3, SIPCOT Industrial Complex, Hosur 635 126, Tamil Nadu.[Titan: annual report] It is listed on both Indian exchanges, as NSE: TITAN and BSE: 500114.[Titan: own report]

A registry number, and what it is not

The CIN is the first registry-issued identifier this Codex has been able to record for any brand: every other Tier A dossier carries an empty registry field, because none of those companies prints one. But the number above is reproduced from Titan's own filings, not from a registry search: an independent confirmation against India's Ministry of Corporate Affairs register has not been pulled, so the registry field in this Codex's data sidecar records the source as the company's own document. Read carefully, a CIN is informative on its own: the TZ segment is the registrar's State code for Tamil Nadu and 1984 is the year of registration, both of which agree with the company's own account of where and when it began.

The promoter group, as filed. Titan's own shareholding pattern as at 30 June 2025 gives the promoter and promoter group as follows.[Titan: shareholding filing]

Shareholder, as named in the filingShares%
Tamilnadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd247,476,72027.88
Tata Sons Private Limited185,058,90020.84
Tata Investment Corporation Ltd17,875,6402.01
Tata Chemicals Limited13,826,1801.56
Ewart Investments Limited4,964,4800.56
Piem Hotels Limited400,0000.05
Total promoter and promoter group469,601,92052.9

Why the date on that table matters, and why a newer one is not used. Titan files a shareholding pattern every quarter, so newer filings exist. But the ones uploaded for the quarters after June 2025 are scanned images with no extractable text, and could not be read by the means available here. Rather than restate June 2025 figures as though they were current, this page dates them and says so. The same figures appear unchanged in Titan's own filing for the quarter ended 30 June 2022[Titan: shareholding filing], so the holdings had been stable for at least three years to that date. No inference is drawn about what they are today.

The brands, and three different counts of them

Titan's own documents do not agree on how many brands it has, because they are counting different things and none of them says which. Three counts, each from a Titan source:

  • Its About Us page says 16 brands, alongside over 8,000 employees and about 38,000 in the overall Titan ecosystem and over 2,000 retail stores.[Titan]
  • Its Our Brands page lists 21 named brands across watches, jewellery, eyecare, dress wear, fragrances and accessories.[Titan]
  • Its annual report names 13 under the watches heading (a list that mixes product brands with retail chains): TITAN, SONATA, FASTRACK, XYLYS, NEBULA, HELIOS, EDGE BY TITAN, POZE, VYB, RAGA, ZOOP, SF and TITAN WORLD.[Titan: annual report]

Helios and Titan World are retail formats, shops that sell watches, including other companies', not watch brands in the sense Sonata or Xylys are. This Codex prints all three counts with their sources rather than picking one and calling it the number, and does not compute a fourth of its own. What the annual report does say about the core of the range is short: Through Titan, Fastrack and Sonata, we have built a portfolio that speaks to different generations, occasions and ways of living.[Titan: annual report]

The names on Titan dials that are not Titan's

Titan also sells watches under brands it does not own. Its own Q4 FY26 earnings presentation records that it Expanded licensed brands portfolio through new launches across Tommy Hilfiger, Police, Ducati, Anne Klein and Aigner.[Titan: presentation] The presentation's own word is licensed; it does not, on the slide read, state the term of any licence, the territory, or which party manufactures. So this page records the relationship as Titan states it and no further. It matters for a reader looking at a watch: a Tommy Hilfiger or Police watch sold in India may be made and distributed under licence by the same company that makes Sonata, and the dial will not say so.

Certification: none found, and none claimed

Unlike Rolex's Superlative Chronometer or Longines' COSC-certified Record collection, no Titan watch product page checked for this dossier makes a chronometer-certification claim of any kind. The three references already cited for price, the Urban Edge (1802sl01), the Automatic Dualis GMT (10076sm01) and the Edge Mechanical (1811wl01), were each checked specifically for COSC, METAS, ISO 3159 or any equivalent third-party testing claim; none carries one.[Titan: own site][Titan: own site][Titan: own site] This is a scoped negative rather than a claim about Titan's entire catalogue: it covers the pages actually read for this dossier, not every reference Titan sells.

Titan's own pages do make other technical claims: water-resistance depths and movement types (quartz, automatic, mechanical) appear routinely. But a water-resistance rating is not a chronometer certification, and this Codex does not treat it as one. No outside testing body, COSC, METAS or any national metrology institute, is named on any Titan watch page read for this dossier.

The collections within the Titan brand itself

Distinct from the three counts of Titan's separately owned brands above (Sonata, Fastrack, Xylys and the rest), Titan's own e-commerce site also organises watches sold under the Titan brand name itself into named collections. Titan's men's watches page lists a "Shop by Collection" filter including Grandmaster, Karishma, Maritime, Neo, Octane, Stellar and Workwear, among others.[Titan: own site] The women's watches page adds Edge and Raga as further named collections, each with its own further-divided sub-lines (for example, Raga alone spans dozens of named variants on the page read).[Titan: own site] This Codex does not reproduce the full filter taxonomy from either page: both list dozens of narrower named variants (colourway and dial-pattern names within a single collection), which is a marketing taxonomy rather than a small number of product lines, and compiling it in full would not serve a reader the way naming the collections themselves does.

Two of these collections carry a dated launch on Titan's own heritage timeline: Raga in 1992 and Edge in 2002, "the slimmest watch in the universe" as Titan's own page puts it[Titan: heritage timeline], and both remain current, active collections on the site read today. See chronology for the dated list in full.

Where a Titan watch is actually made

Titan's own earnings presentation lists the watch plants as Manufacturing Plants in Hosur and Coimbatore, Roorkee, Pantnagar , and Sikkim[Titan: presentation]. The stray space before that comma is as printed. Its statutory Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report gives the same five under its certification list: Factories under Watches Division - Hosur, Pantnagar, Roorkee, Sikkim and Coimbatore; 7 service centres.[Titan: BRSR]

Two factory counts, same year, both Titan's

The annual report's summary page gives 11 Manufacturing and Assembly Facilities[Titan: annual report], repeated on the earnings presentation's overview slide.[Titan: presentation] The statutory BRSR for the same year says The entity operates through 10 company-owned factories and 42 outsourced factories.[Titan: BRSR] Eleven and ten are both published by Titan for the year ended 31 March 2026, and neither document defines its term against the other's. Both are entity-wide rather than watch-specific, so neither is a count of watch plants. This Codex publishes both against their own documents and reconciles neither. The 42 outsourced factories carry the same caution separately: entity-wide, covering jewellery and eyecare as well as watches, and Titan does not name them.

What is not published: no Titan document read for this page assigns a product or a movement type to a particular plant. Nothing here says Hosur makes movements or Coimbatore makes cases, because no source found says it.

What a Titan watch costs, from Titan

This is the first dossier in this Codex to carry an official list price, because Titan is the first of these companies found publishing one. On its own site, the price appears with the literal label MRP and the note Inclusive of all taxes*. Three examples, each read on 29 September 2026:

ReferenceName, as listedMRP as displayed
1802sl01Titan Men's Urban Edge Lustrous Silver Dial Leather Watch₹ 1,995.00[Titan: own site]
10076sm01Titan Automatic Dualis GMT₹ 53,995.00[Titan: own site]
1811wl01Titan Edge Mechanical Black Dial Mechanical Leather Strap Watch for Men₹ 212,500.00[Titan: own site]

Why Titan publishes a price and the Swiss brands do not, and why that is not a virtue

MRP is a legal artefact, not a transparency policy. Printing a maximum retail price on packaged goods is a statutory requirement in India, so a brand selling watches to Indian consumers publishes one because the law asks it to. That makes Titan's price disclosure a different kind of fact from a brand voluntarily choosing to list prices, and this Codex does not treat publishing a price as better conduct than not publishing one: the never-rank rule applies to disclosure as much as to watches.

Three cautions on the figures above. They are MRPs, which are ceilings rather than transaction prices, and on the pages read none of the three showed a discounted or struck-through price beside it. They carry an asterisk against Inclusive of all taxes* whose footnote was not located on the pages read, so they are not represented here as unconditional. And they are a snapshot of three references out of a catalogue the same site described as 635 items for men's Titan watches alone on the date read[Titan: own site], a count that moves with the catalogue, and a span rather than a price band for the brand.

No band is assigned. This Codex's budget bands are defined in US dollars for comparability, and converting a rupee MRP would require a dated exchange rate. A converted figure would be this Codex's arithmetic rather than Titan's price, so none is published and the band assignment is recorded as outstanding.

What this page does not yet tell you

  • An independent registry confirmation of Titan Company Limited against India's Ministry of Corporate Affairs register: the CIN here is from Titan's own filings.
  • A shareholding pattern later than 30 June 2025 in machine-readable form; the newer uploads are scanned images.
  • Which plant makes what: Titan publishes plant locations by division only.
  • The terms, territories or manufacturers behind the licensed brands.
  • Xylys and Nebula's own internal collection-level detail: these are separately owned Titan brands, not covered by the Titan-brand collections section above.
  • A launch date for Sonata, Titan's budget watch brand: not stated on any official Titan page checked, including the heritage timeline that dates Raga (1992) and Fastrack (2003).
  • A launch date for the "World of Titan" retail-showroom concept by that name: the heritage timeline dates a 1990 Mumbai showroom inauguration but does not attach that name to it.
  • The year Titan Company Limited was listed on the NSE and BSE: not stated on the official pages checked for this dossier.

Favre Leuba: an Indian company bought a Swiss brand, then liquidated the company holding it

This is the only case in this Codex so far of the usual direction of travel reversing, an Indian manufacturer acquiring a Swiss heritage brand rather than the other way round, and Titan documented both ends of it in its own filings.

The acquisition. On 16 November 2011, Titan Industries Limited told the exchanges it had signed a binding offer for the acquisition of brand Favre Leuba, taking global rights to the trademarks on an asset purchase mode, for a sum under Euro 2 million, to complement and strengthen the existing watches brand portfolio of the Company with a Swiss heritage brand.[Titan: exchange filing] That filing describes the brand as created in Switzerland in 1737.[Titan: exchange filing]

Two Titan accounts of the brand's age, and they are not the same claim. Titan's current entity page for the subsidiary splits what the 2011 filing compressed: The first (pocket) watch was manufactured by TCL Watches Switzerland AG (earlier known as Favre Leuba AG) in the year 1718, and separately, the brand was registered as a trademark in 1737.[Titan] A first watch in 1718 and a trademark in 1737 are two different events, and "created in Switzerland in 1737" elides them. Both of Titan's statements are published here, dated, and neither is adopted as the brand's founding date by this Codex.

A near-miss against one of this Codex's own withheld claims

The Legacy page has withheld, since Session 08, any claim about a pre-1735 maker still operating, for want of a registry, museum or learned-society record. Titan's 1718 first-watch claim is earlier than 1735, and it does not resolve that withheld claim, for two reasons stated plainly. First, it is a brand owner's own account, which is exactly the class of evidence the withholding was designed to exclude. Second, and decisively, the maker is not still operating: the company holding the brand was liquidated in 2024, as below. The withheld claim stays withheld, and this is recorded as a near-miss rather than an answer.

The wind-down, with the reason Titan itself gave for it. In an outcome filed with both exchanges on 29 April 2021, Titan stated: During the year ended 31 March 2021, the Company decided to significantly scale down the operations of its wholly owned subsidiary, Favre Leuba AG (FLAG) due to the adverse impact on its operations post the covid 19 pandemic.[Titan: exchange filing] The stated cause is carried here rather than cropped, because a decision and the reason given for it are not the same fact. The subsidiary was subsequently renamed. Titan's own current page for it states: TCL Watches Switzerland AG (earlier known as Favre Leuba AG) was voluntarily liquidated. Consequent to the completion of liquidation process, TCL Watches Switzerland AG ceased to be a wholly owned subsidiary of the Company effective 21st March 2024.[Titan] Titan's statutory BRSR for FY 2023-24 records the same event: TCL Watches Switzerland AG (formerly known as Favre Leuba AG) Liquidated with effect from 21st March 2024.[Titan: BRSR]

Where the trademark went is not disclosed. The subsidiary's own financial statements as at 31 March 2023, uploaded by Titan and printing the company's name hyphenated as Favre-Leuba AG, still carried the trade mark as an intangible asset at CHF 632,019 (identical to the prior year's CHF 632,019), with no note of a sale, transfer or disposal, no buyer and no consideration named anywhere in the statements.[Titan: subsidiary accounts]

What was checked for the brand's current absence, and what was not. "Favre Leuba" does not appear on Titan's current brand portfolio page, on its About Us page, or in its Q4 FY26 earnings presentation; on the subsidiaries page it survives only as the former name of the liquidated entity.[Titan] Two documents could not be read in full and are therefore excluded from that negative rather than counted in it: the FY 2025-26 annual report, readable here only to approximately page 63 of a much longer file, and the FY 2025-26 BRSR, whose retrieval stopped at roughly 60 of about 80 pages. No disposal of the brand or its trademarks is disclosed in any Titan document that could be read for this page: a claim about what was read, with the unread portions named.

Three employee counts, all Titan's, all for about the same time

Titan publishes headcount in at least three shapes, and they do not agree:

  • The Q4 FY26 earnings presentation gives 13,750+ Employees on roll.[Titan: presentation]
  • The annual report prints on-roll employees by function: Top Management and Leadership Nos. 40, Manufacturing Nos. 3,161, Sales, Marketing & Retail Nos. 5,032, Corporate & Support Functions Nos. 1,036, and off-roll as At Manufacturing and Offices Nos. 5,670 and At Retail Stores Nos. 4,669.[Titan: annual report]
  • The About Us page says over 8,000 employees and about 38,000 in the overall Titan ecosystem[Titan], undated on the page read, so it cannot be placed against the other two as a figure for the same moment.

No total is added up here. Summing the annual report's categories would produce a number Titan does not print, and this Codex does not publish a derived figure as though the company published it. What can be said is that the three documents count different populations: on-roll, on-roll plus off-roll, and an undefined "ecosystem", that one of the three carries no date, and that none of them states its basis against the others. The Citizen dossier had to publish two disagreeing employee counts from that company's own documents; Titan makes three.

Commonly confused

  • "Titan is a Tata company, so the Tatas own it." Tata group entities together hold the larger part of the promoter block, but the single largest holder in Titan's own filing is TIDCO, a Tamil Nadu State government corporation, at 27.88% against Tata Sons' 20.84%.[Titan: shareholding filing]
  • "Titan is a watch company." By revenue it is mostly a jewellery company; see the published figures. Both statements are true of different things, which is why the segment table matters.
  • "Tanishq and CaratLane are separate companies." Tanishq is a Titan brand; CaratLane is a subsidiary, CaratLane Trading Private Limited.[Titan] Neither is covered in this watch Codex beyond that.
  • "Titan owns Favre Leuba." It bought the brand in 2011; the subsidiary holding it was liquidated with effect from 21 March 2024, and where the trademark now sits is not disclosed in any Titan document read. See above.
  • "A Tommy Hilfiger or Police watch has nothing to do with Titan." Titan's own presentation lists both among its licensed brands.[Titan: presentation]

Does Titan make for other brands?

Make your own covers movement supply and private label generally; this is only what Titan's own material says. Titan states a position, and it states it on a website of its own built for the purpose. Its OEM site says: Titan ventures into the OEM arena, providing solutions through expertise gained by decades of research and manufacturing watches and their components in-house.[Titan]

What is not on it. No minimum order quantity, no capacity figure, no price list, no client list and no eligibility terms were found on the pages of that site that could be read; parts of it returned server errors when checked on 29 September 2026.[Titan] So the position is: a declared OEM business, with no published commercial terms.

The fourth distinct position this Codex has on record

Four companies, four different answers to the same question, and this Codex ranks none of them. Citizen's movement arm supplies openly and publishes a minimum order on a calibre page. Casio says nothing across eighteen checked pages. Omega says nothing while its parent says something expansive about the group. Titan declares an OEM business on a dedicated site and publishes no terms on it, and separately makes watches under other companies' names by licence, which is the same question from the other end. Rolex was checked more narrowly and found silent.

Deep Dive

The published figures

What Titan reports, in its own words, and what it does not break out. If the words below are unfamiliar, the money page explains them from the beginning, and carries Titan's group figures alongside the other companies in this Codex.

Titan's financial year ends 31 March, and its most recent full year is the one ended 31 March 2026. As an Indian listed company it publishes more detail than any other brand in this Codex, including, unusually, a named advertising line and a segment result for watches.

The watch business. For the year ended 31 March 2026 the Watches segment reported ₹5,267 crore against ₹4,598 crore, and a segment result of ₹824 crore against ₹548 crore, both audited.[Titan: own report] Titan's own presentation states those movements as +14.5% and +50.4% respectively, for the full year rather than the quarter.[Titan: presentation]

Two labels on that ₹5,267 crore, and neither of them is plain "revenue"

The audited segment table heads the column Revenue (including other income)[Titan: own report], and Titan's presentation calls the same figure total income.[Titan: presentation] So ₹5,267 crore is not revenue from operations for the watch business; it includes other income. This Codex previously described this figure as the segment's "revenue" on the money page, which was more precise-sounding than the source allows; that wording has been corrected and the correction logged.

And the segment result is not the watch business's profit. Titan's own label reads Profit/ (loss) from segments before finance costs, exceptional item and tax[Titan: own report], and no after-tax figure for the segment is published at all.

The group, for scale. Consolidated revenue from operations of ₹87,584 crore against ₹60,456 crore, total income of ₹88,136 crore, total expenses of ₹81,235 crore, profit before tax of ₹6,801 crore and profit for the period of ₹5,073 crore against ₹3,337 crore.[Titan: own report] The Jewellery segment alone reported ₹79,660 crore of the group's ₹88,136 crore of total income.[Titan: own report]

Why total income minus total expenses does not give the profit before tax

A reader checking the arithmetic will find that ₹88,136 crore of total income less ₹81,235 crore of total expenses leaves ₹6,901 crore, while the statement gives profit before tax as ₹6,801 crore, a hundred crore apart. The statement supplies the missing line itself: an exceptional item of ₹101 crore, which its own note attributes to the incremental impact of the Labour Code changes.[Titan: own report] Profit before the exceptional item and tax is ₹6,902 crore; after the ₹101 crore charge, profit before tax is ₹6,801 crore. The prior year carries no such item, so a year-on-year comparison of these two profit lines is not comparing like with like, which is exactly why the figure is published here with its exceptional item named rather than as a bare number.

Two Titan headline totals for the same year, and the company explains the gap itself

The audited results give total income of ₹88,136 crore for the year ended 31 March 2026.[Titan: own report] The earnings presentation's own overview slide gives, for the same year, ₹761 bn FY26 Total income (excl. Bullion & Digi-gold).[Titan: presentation] The parenthesis is the explanation, and it is Titan's own: the presentation figure excludes bullion and digital-gold sales, which the audited statement includes. Two figures, two bases, both the company's, each labelled. This Codex prints both with their labels and does not subtract one from the other: the difference would be a derived number, and a derived number is not a published one.

Advertising. Titan shows Advertising as its own named line in its audited results: ₹1,535 crore consolidated for the year ended 31 March 2026, against ₹1,308 crore the year before, with the standalone company figure at ₹1,220 crore against ₹979 crore.[Titan: own report] It is one figure for the whole company, not split by segment or brand, so none of it can be attributed to watches. That makes Titan one of only two companies in this Codex that publishes an advertising amount at all.

Retail footprint. The watch business is stated as 755 Stores, printed with a footnote marker and dated to March 2026 on the slide, alongside 8,500+ Multi Brand Outlet Presence, against a group total of 3,603 Stores.[Titan: presentation] Titan's About Us page says over 2,000 retail stores[Titan], a fourth count on the same pattern as the brand and employee counts above, and carrying no date at all on the page read, which is why it is not set against the dated figures as though it described the same moment.

These figures are reported here as Titan Company Limited published them. This Codex does not interpret them, does not say whether they are good or bad, does not compare them with another company's, and publishes no valuation of Titan or of any watch. Currency, unit and period are stated because all three change the meaning of a number: a crore is ten million, and a Titan financial year runs April to March.

Every claim above traces to one of these. All are Titan's own: its corporate website, its own e-commerce site, its statutory annual report and BRSR, its audited results, its shareholding-pattern filings, its stock-exchange intimations, a subsidiary's own accounts uploaded by Titan, and its OEM site. They are Tier 1 for facts about Titan and are marked as attributed in the text. No independent registry, regulator or museum record appears on this page, and the absence is stated rather than papered over. No forum, marketplace, dealer blog or editorial site was used as the source of any fact.

  1. Tier 1 Titan OEM site: titanoem.com, source read 2026-09-29. Provenance stated rather than assumed: the copy is written in Titan's own first person and the content is a Titan brand timeline, but no copyright line, registered-office line or company number could be read on the page, so this being Titan's own site is an inference from its text, not a statement the page makes. Pages under /about-us returned HTTP 500 on the date read; the quoted text was read from the site root.
